Lip flip Botox — Toronto’s newest beauty trend — may be your favourite low-cost pout enhancer or a total mystery! If you’ve heard of the lip flip treatment and wondered what it is and why there’s so much buzz around it, read on for the juicy details that you need to know.
Not everyone wants the biggest lips possible today. 2020 lip augmentation trends have leaned toward subtle, natural fullness and proportionate enhancements.
In keeping with the sophisticated new approach, the latest cosmetic improvement doesn’t require filler at all! It’s an injection using tiny, “baby” Botox doses (or other neuromodulators).
The fast, in-office treatment is designed to relax upper lip edges just enough to pull them up and flip the lip outward ever so slightly.
It shows a little more attractive fullness without adding lip filler volume. Read on to discover why this quick and straightforward fix is helping Sovereign Skin patients perk up their smile.
Botox lip flip is a fast cosmetic injection designed to roll the upper lip slightly outward, temporarily. When more of the “pink” part of the mouth (mucosal tissue) is exposed, the lip may appear larger. This subtle enhancement lasts just about 2 months and requires no incisions or scars.
Lip augmentation (lip filler) is typically performed with hyaluronic acid-based fillers, HA. Common brands include Juvéderm, Restylane, Volbella, and Vollure. These thick, hydrating gels can be injected into the lips, where they increase volume and hold a fuller form for roughly 4 to 6 months. The material is absorbed into the body, which naturally creates HA on its own too.
Conversely, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Nuceiva are neuromodulators. They are medications designed to reduce muscle movement, and they don’t fill. They don’t add volume. When injected to the area just above the upper lip (orbicularis oris muscle) in tiny doses, the downward pull relaxes. The lip can then curve back and flip outward slightly.
Filler and Botox are not the same, but the two can be used together. And they often are! If you’re interested in perking up your lips, a fuller smile, or improving symmetry, you may choose between these 2 popular methods for the enhancement you want.
Only the superficial layers of muscle at the sides of the upper and lower lips will be treated. Reducing signals to muscles just under the skin allows deeper lip muscles to keep working normally while surface fibres relax. This very thin, targeted layer receives only 1 or 2 units of product in each key point. This is a much lower dose than typically used in other areas of the face, such as the frown lines.
Because it’s a baby Botox dose, the effects are relatively short-lived. Typically, 4 to 6 weeks will allow the product to wear off, and patients who wish to maintain their result will repeat the treatment.
For such a technically precise treatment, specialists who are extremely experienced and familiar with facial anatomy are best equipped to get it right.
Because the injections used for this treatment are so very small, you should feel just a pinch, if anything at all. Our doctors will apply a topical numbing cream to your treatment area, and most patients say they feel completely comfortable. The best part? The whole process takes only a few minutes.

Bruising is possible with any injection, though these shallow needle pokes don’t tend to leave noticeable bruising or swelling. Most patients return to their day without interruption immediately following their appointment. You can have your lip flipped over a lunch break and not miss a beat!
The primary concern with this delicate cosmetic “tweak” is using too much product. This is a case where less is more, and you’ll need an experienced, precise practitioner who can ensure that they don’t overdo the injection.
The most obvious drawback of too much Botox in the outer lip muscle would be changes in speaking and moving the mouth regularly. The area would appear smooth until talking and eating, which could become difficult. Some patients have found they couldn’t whistle or suck through a straw temporarily until the treatment wore off.
We use micro-doses so small that only the thin upper layer of muscle fibre is affected and lips retain robust movement. The trade-off, unfortunately, is that the effects will not last as long as typical wrinkle injections elsewhere on the face.
The Botox lip flip requires only 4 to 8 units of product in most cases. Cosmetic clinics vary in their pricing. However, the overall cost for lip flip treatment will be significantly less than most forehead treatment.
You may pay approximately $325CAD plus HST for your treatment. (Prices are subject to change with time.)
